Commercially delivered 2-chloro-5-methyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (1 metric ton) was not identical to the commonly used dye intermediate; it was found that the material was a pure but not yet described molecule. The manufacturer’s mistake consisted of using a larger amount of nitric acid and contamination with Fe(III) ions during production. The contamination with Fe(III) was probably originated from the iron reactor. The given facts indicate that the supplier/manufacturer does not carry out any inter-operation checks and final analyzes.
