Half a century from the discovery of soft contact lenses: An example of serendipity by Miroslav Raab.
The term serendipity means the faculty of making happy and unexpected discoveries by accident. It can be illustrated by key moments in human life, but particularly by important discoveries in science and technology. Many Czech scientists and inventors also experienced the role of serendipity in their achievements. Serendipity can also be seen in the famous Wichterle’s discovery of soft contact lenses. Just half a century ago the Czechoslovak patent on „The method of preparation of contact lenses“ was granted.
