Noam Chomsky and others proposed that an important part of human linguistic knowledge is innate. This position has been challenged numerous times, but at the same time, developmental psychology has shown that children are born with a rich set of knowledge about the world. The innateness hypothesis should no longer be viewed as extreme. The article summarizes the principal arguments for linguistic nativism, and the challenges to these arguments. It is pointed out that the current state of the debate is not whether language is innate, but how general are the innate mechanisms that support language development.
